Episode 20: My Experience with Carnivore during Pregnancy

Welcome to Episode 20 of The Road to Carnivore Podcast!

In this 16-minute episode, I share my personal experience with the carnivore diet during pregnancy.

Despite the fact that I was carnivore for nearly 2 years prior to this pregnancy, having a fully carnivore pregnancy was literally not possible for me. I was so sick with nausea, vomiting, and meat aversions in the first trimester, that any attempts to force these foods down resulted in being overruled by my body, and all the food coming back up.

While it was very upsetting at the time, my research into this topic confirmed that that this kind of experience is actually the norm, carnivore or not, and is actually a protective response during early stages of pregnancy.

Thank you, thank you Joanne! I am currently 8 weeks pregnant and experiencing extreme, debilitating morning sickness. I actually went on my phone trying to search for something to take my mind off of the misery and for some encouragement and saw your podcast that was just posted!!!!!! I was so excited to see you were putting more content up and couldn’t believe it was about pregnancy, and exactly what I’m dealing with and was looking for right now! I have had six previous pregnancies with very, very severe hyperemesis gravidarum which put me in the hospital hospitalized on IVs for months till about week 23. I almost died with my first pregnancy from dehydration. I’ve tried every medication on Earth (side note, Unisom taken in small doses throughout the day has been the best thing I have ever found that actually helps! If anyone wants to know more, definitely ask your Dr about it). I’ve been a carnivore for 4 years now and have received so many amazing health benefits and so much healing! It literally did save my life.

I can tell you every single one of my pregnancies, no matter how close to carnivore or the SAD diet ate we’re about the same morning sickness-wise. It’s just kind of a survival period for the first part of I think. Totally agree with you that a lot of the things that carnivore had cured for me like heartburn and constipation anxiety depression etc just to name a few, definitely returns when going more off track, but I know that I will be able to return to that place where I feel amazing as soon as I’m able to eat well again. Thank you for your content! Really appreciate it! ๐Ÿ™‚ And congratulations on your new little one!!

    • Hi Alayna, congratulations on your pregnancy!! I wish you the very best during such a special time. And, I appreciate your heartfelt and personal comment. You have clearly been through a lot, and I understand a lot of it! It sounds like you have a warrior spirit and I applaud that. Wishing you all the best!

Wow, Joanne. This is so unbelievably helpful! Husband and I are trying for our first baby next week. I’m carnivore due to autoimmune, and it has reversed my condition… plus alopecia, mental health, chronic idiopathic pruiritus, the list is lengthy. I can’t stomach anything other than fatty beef, eggs, grass fed butter, fish, and fruits. Fingers crossed we conceive and I will listen to my body cues. Hoping I get nausea now – as crazy as that sounds! Thank you for sharing your wealth of information.

    • Hi Madison, how wonderful that you are starting your family. Pregnancy is a very unique and extraordinary time. Do the very best you can to manage the many things that will happen, and watch as things change too. Keep me updated on how it goes!

In my first trimester, and eating meat is a mental chore. Resulting more to dairy, and GF carbs as Iโ€™m celiac. Carnivore has been the biggest blessing in my overall health the last 2 years.. until now! Haha canโ€™t wait to go back, but for now, I will eat what my body prefers! Thank you so much for this post, as it can seem like a failure, to deviate from the diet. Much appreciated find!
